Echodle

Privacy

Echodle counts finished rounds and page visits, never who played them: there are no accounts, no ads and no cookies, and your progress stays in your browser.

On your device

Your progress, streak, practice record and the beta notice you dismissed are kept in your browser's local storage. Clearing site data removes them. They are never stored on the server.

Visit counts

Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views, the page you came from, your country, your device, operating system and browser type, and how fast the page loaded. It sets no cookie and does not follow you across sites.

Game stats

Your guesses and your Real or fake answers go to the server to be checked, with the puzzle's date, whether it is played from the archive, and whether the page is restoring answers you already gave. When you finish a round, Echodle counts it: which quote, how many guesses, whether you solved it, whether it was the daily, practice or an archive day, and the day. In Real or fake, it counts for each line whether you answered right. This shows how hard each quote is. Nothing about you is stored with the count, and nothing you send is kept apart from it.

Practice also sends the quotes you have already played, so it can give you a new one; that list is not kept.

To count each round only once, the server makes a scrambled key from your IP address. The key changes every day and cannot be turned back into the address without that day's secret. The key and the secret are deleted once the day is over. Cloudflare keeps backups of the database for up to 30 days, and a deleted key and secret stay in them until they expire.

Hosting

Echodle runs on Cloudflare, which handles every request, including your IP address, to serve and protect the site. The server also uses the address for a moment to slow down anyone sending guesses too fast; it is not written down. Read Cloudflare's privacy policy.
